Happy Birthday!

Eleven years ago today, on her very first birthday, Demigoddess the Younger looked like this:

Even then, she was a tiny slave to her emotions. Little could I have imagined what I would be in for when she learned to speak.

Thankfully, in addition to an exhausting flair for the dramatic, the younger Demi was also blessed with a highly-developed sense of humor, so that, just at the point when I’m ready to sell her to the circus, she will say or do something totally unexpected and charming.

The child can just plain crack me up. And her laugh is the most infectious thing I have ever heard.

These days, Ms. Younger looks like this:

That's her getting Johan Santana's Autograph at Twins Fest a few months ago. Not only can she speak, but in this photo (which appeared on the front page of the sports section in our local paper), she's speaking to a Cy Young Award-winning pitcher in his own native SPANISH.

To the best accessorized girl in the soon-to-be seventh grade, who draws such amazing pictures, takes such loving care of the dog, and who certainly does NOT hate taking baths, I say,

I love you!

Dear Demi the Younger,

One of the best things about being "The Best Boyfriend Ever," to use your mother's words, is that I get to hang out sometimes with you and your sister. I mean, if it hadn't been for you guys, I wouldn't have seen "Because of Winn-Dixie." And if it weren't for me, would we be eating wings and playing trivia tonight? It's all good, huh?

Happy Birthday!

I REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE THAT SMALL JANE!!! and it makes me feel old. But mostly it makes me glad to be the proud aunt of such a lovely, spirited, funny young lady.
Can't wait for wings and trivia!

Wasn't that photo taken right before she downed like 4 pieces of pizza?

As I told you recently, I remember working for you during your maternity leave and going to my first drag show at the Gay 90s with your co-worker. To think if it hadn’t been for Jane I might never have seen a grown man dressed up in Vegas showgirl costume!

(Who am I kidding? I live in Seattle. I can see that every weekend. But I might not have seen it for a lot longer if it hadn’t been for Baby Jane.)

Happy Birthday to Jane!

Those eyes! I forgot about Jane's super ginormous blue eyes that now fit her face. She's a darling gal, so glad you birthed her. Our little suga' buga'.

(lurker from the Batgirl blog here, and fellow Johan Santana lover)

That's cool that Demi the Younger speaks Spanish :) I studied Spanish from 8th grade all through high school and college, and now I use it frequently in my job as a secretary / interpreter at my local Health Department. How many years of espaƱol has she had?

Hi Becky!

Both DemiGoddesses went to a Spanish immersion elementary school, so they're pretty much fluent now that they're at the junior high and high school.

I hope they'll be able to use it in their careers some day!
